On a busy highway in India, amidst the relentless roar of passing vehicles, a small white donkey stood trembling on the asphalt. He was bleeding profusely, his shoulder bearing a deep gash that exposed raw flesh. Cars and motorcycles zipped past him, indifferent to his suffering.
A Desperate Call for Help

It was clear that he had been hit by a speeding vehicle—perhaps a truck that never slowed down. His eyes, dark with pain and confusion, searched for something—someone—to make it stop.
A concerned passerby dialed Animal Aid Unlimited, a local rescue organization dedicated to saving street animals. Within minutes, a team was dispatched. Time was running out.
A Race Against Time

When the rescuers arrived, they found the donkey standing motionless, his legs quivering. Blood ran down his leg, pooling onto the pavement. The wound was deep, jagged, and fresh. The sheer amount of blood loss had drained him of any strength to resist.
Despite the urgency, the rescuers moved slowly and gently. They knew that even in pain, an injured animal might panic. But this donkey—later named Hobnob—stood completely still. He was too weak to fight.
Two rescuers from Animal Aid Unlimited wrapped their arms around him, lifting him into the back of their rescue truck. He did not resist. He could not. His head hung low as they drove him to the safety of their shelter.
The Fight to Save Hobnob

At the shelter, the veterinary team immediately assessed Hobnob’s condition. The gash on his shoulder was filled with dirt, grime, and bits of gravel from the road. The injury had to be cleaned, flushed, and bandaged—but they had to be careful. His body had suffered a shock, and every touch brought him pain.
A rescuer whispered softly to him, “You’re safe now.” As if he understood, Hobnob closed his eyes.
The team worked methodically:
- They flushed the wound with sterile saline, washing away dirt and bacteria.
- They applied antiseptic to prevent infection.
- They bandaged the wound to stop the bleeding.
- They gave him painkillers and started him on antibiotics.
Hobnob stood through it all without resistance, his exhausted body surrendering to the hands that were trying to save him.
The Road to Recovery

Hobnob’s recovery was not quick, nor was it easy. For 54 days, his wound needed regular cleaning and dressing changes. At first, he was too weak to eat much. But as the days passed, his appetite returned.
His rescuers noticed small but powerful changes:
- His ears, once drooping, started perking up.
- His eyes, once filled with pain, began to soften.
- His body, once frail, slowly gained strength.
As his wounds healed, so did his spirit. He began greeting his caretakers, rubbing his head against them. He was no longer just surviving—he was learning to trust.
A New Life for Hobnob

Weeks later, Hobnob took his first steps outside the treatment area. He was finally strong enough to join the other rescued donkeys at the sanctuary. For the first time in what was likely a very long time, he was surrounded by others like him.
He was no longer alone.
Today, Hobnob roams freely in the sanctuary, grazing peacefully under the sun. He has made friends, plays with the other donkeys, and loves receiving gentle head rubs from his caretakers.
If you met him now, you would never guess the pain he endured. His wound has healed into a faint scar—a reminder of his past but also of his survival.
Because someone called for help. Because rescuers arrived in time. Because kindness and compassion gave him another chance at life.
Hobnob is living proof that no life is too small to save.
