What Does OG Mean In Rap? (EXPLAINED)

OG has been a prominent slang since the rise of rap in the 80s and 90s. But what does it mean and how is it used in the urban setting?

OG is short for Original Gangster. It came into the mainstream scene with Ice-T’s work. It primarily meant an old school gangster or street man that had traditional morals and methods. It might also refer to someone badass but archaic.

“Your grandpa is OG. I don’t know how he survived that life.”

However, in more recent times, OG is used to substitute “original.” If something is not fake or if someone is a pioneer, then they are OG.

“I got some OG Rolexes that will make you jealous.”
