What Does Trenches Mean In Rap? (EXPLAINED)

You might have heard rappers use the term “trenches” in some of their songs, especially the gangsta ones, but what does it mean?

Trenches, in reality, are deep excavations or depressions on the ground that are mostly deeper than it is wider. They are often used in war and are described as “hell.” When used by rappers, it refers to low-income neighborhoods that have high rates of violence and crime. Many rappers come from or dominate the trenches.

Examples:

“Drake isn’t from the trenches. He is a rich kid that used his money to gain fame.”

“Tupac and Snoop are real men that survived the trenches.”
